Streets History
The Village of Jerome, named for Jerome Kuhn, son of the president of the Twin Falls North Side Land and Water Company, was surveyed and platted in the summer of 1907. By September 30, 1907, the day of the formal opening of the townsite and sale of town lots, Jerome had electricity and piped water from the well east of town.
A petition containing more than 200 signatures was presented to the Lincoln County Commissioners on July 15, 1909, requesting that Jerome be incorporated as a village. The petition was granted. A new section of the townsite opened in September, 1908, and in February, 1909 the forty acre strip around the perimeter of the original townsite was opened in a drawing.
On August 29, 1911 Ordinance No. 32 passed. It provided for the issuance of municipal coupon bonds for the grading, paving, construction and laying out of streets and alleys. The first attempt at providing oiled streets in September 1914 ended in disaster. The oil stuck to everything, to wheels in big chunks and to shoes in big globs that ended up being tracked into every building in town. Five years later, in April, 1919 the City awarded an $84,915 contract to pave 11 blocks in the center of town, an improvement project that was completed in 1920.
As of January 20, 2005 there are approximately 70 miles of paved streets in the City of Jerome.
The Public Works Department maintains a very aggressive street maintenance policy. This consists of sweeping, patching, crack filling, overlaying, seal and chip, snow removal and sanding.
