Fire Prevention
Mission
The Fire Prevention Division is dedicated to fire and life safety inspections and education within the City of Jerome. Its primary mission is to assist the business community in making their facilities safe for both customers and employees and to help educate all members of the community in the importance of fire safety and prevention.
About the Division
The division reviews plans, conducts inspections to insure code compliance, authorizes occupancy for completed commercial projects or occupancy of existing commercial buildings and in home daycare facilities in conjunction with the city building department. Fire pre-planning for target hazards and occupancies with high life safety concerns are conducted to assist responding personnel in effectively managing emergencies with available resources.
The division also promotes public education in life safety and fire prevention. This is accomplished through annual public educational events in the schools and community, fire station tours, and residential smoke detector checks and installation.
The city currently utilizes the 2012 version of the International Fire Code as adopted by the State of Idaho. The current version of the code is available on line from the State Fire Marshal’s website.
Inspections
Inspections are performed prior to opening a new business and on an annual basis for existing businesses within the city limits. A new self-fire inspection worksheet has been created to assist existing business owners in recognizing and correcting possible hazards within their facility.
This worksheet (PDF) is available and is intended to give business owners a list of the most common hazards that we encounter but is not all inclusive. This worksheet is a tool to be used to aid a business owner in keeping their place of business safe and is not intended to take the place of the annual fire inspection.
Inspection Hours
Normal inspection hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The fire department currently has 7 fire inspectors on staff with only 1 inspector assigned full time to the division. All of the fire inspectors are full time firefighters and subject to emergency calls at any time.
Any fees associated with inspections need to be paid through the City Clerk prior to scheduling an inspection. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an inspection please contact our office.
